I have found a news review on the situation of piracy. It talks about different softwares now being used to help stop piracy from happening online. Piracy has a huge effect on the film industry so if the software proves to work well, this could end the problem quickly.

What is wrong with the British film industry?
The British film industry is not making as much money as it used to be and it is thought that the success of British films is going downwards.  The industry is also becoming smaller and less directors are making films, as it seems America are now dominating the industry.
Firstly, not many directors are willing to invest in making a British movie anymore as they rarely succeed against the US market. They are often afraid of taking risks as they could backfire, which is why the British films are not meeting the standards of the industry due to the safe playing  storylines and setups. Or British film makers try to copy the stereotypical ‘Hollywood’ films which rarely ever meet up to the audiences expectations. In addition many British films are not receiving funding as the UKFC (United Kingdom film council) has closed down and this is causing the industry to drop, as they funded all independent British films. Directors cannot find the money to create extravagant and unusual films like America and therefore many are made on a low budget and do not appeal to the International market.
Another reason the British film industry is not doing as well is because many British film directors focus their storylines on the British culture and history for example, ‘The Kings Speech’ is based on UK history and culture and was a huge success, however this is normally not the case for the majority of films as it does not appeal to an international audience and therefore will not make as much profit. A way around this is that many British films have input from America which can help them with funding and also gain a wider target audience. This then often raises the success of the film and an example of this is Pirates of the Caribbean as it includes some well known American actors.

Avatar Question

section B

“Successful media products depend as much upon marketing and distribution to a specific audience as they do upon good production practices” to what extent would you agree with this statement?

To some extent, I do agree with this statement because many films have relied on their MARKETING campaign and DISTRIBUTION to sell to sell the film and make it a success for whichever GENRE. Having a large well known distributor is what picks the film up and gets it to the correct audience.
The Woman In black (James Watkins 2012) is an example of this as they had a very small budget and were taking a risk with the film by basing it around the novel.  However, it was produced by Hammer, which is well known for its horror, which therefore helps towards the marketing and distributing as people recognise the name. This brings up the battle of COMMERCIAL VS CRITICAL SUCCESS, as the film is already deemed successful because of its distributor and the MARKETING CAMPAIGN around it such as interactive websites and posters. But the film did have some advantages as it was distributed by Momentum Pictures and CBS Films which is an oligopoly as CBS also owns other media types and to a certain extent dominates part of the market. Also because one company is British and one is American, they both bring a SPECIFIC AUDIENCE. Therefore this is an example of how distribution is just as important as production practices as they drew in a wider group of audiences and also used their power in the industry to market the film and create viral campaigns.
I also agree with this statement because ‘The Artist’ was produced by a small French company and didn’t use STAR POWER to become a success. But instead became a huge success because of its distributor The Weinstein Company. They marketed the film well with TRAILERS and also reviews on websites added to the viral campaign. Mark Kermode did a positive review a month before the films release which put more power behind the film and promoted it to the TARGET AUDIENCE. This is a good example of how distributors are just as important as they use their power in the film industry to get the film recognised and noticed by the right audience. This is why the artist won numerous awards at the Oscars because of how it was targeted to an international audience.
However, on the other hand, some films were let down by the distribution side such as ‘The Boat That Rocked’ as its audience was too specific and aimed too much at Americans, that it was a disaster and surprised the industry . Its production practices were very well executed, with it including star power and also financing the film well. However, the distributors didn’t meet the expectations and failed to create a work of mouth before its release. This proves that marketing and distributing the film is very important and can change the predictions of success for the film very quickly.
But to some extent I believe this is not always the case. As some films are almost guaranteed to be a success without the input of distribution such as ‘Inception’ directed by Christopher Nolan. It was produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary pictures, meaning it  had all the financial backup it needed and also this shows SYNERGY as the different companies are working together and use all different media types to do this such as online, and also television. Star power also worked to their advantage with Leonardo Di Caprio as the lead role, drawing in a larger audience. Also the TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE behind the filmsuch as 3D and CGI automatically attracts more people as its new technology and links with the PARADIME SHIFT and cinemas installing more up to date technology. This signifies that the movie was already a good success and had a target audience before marketing and distribution even started. To no surprise, the film grossed over $800 million worldwide and is now in the top 5 highest profit making films in America. Therefore, this leads me to also slightly disagree with the statement because the production practices were good enough to bring success to the film already and therefore distribution and marketing wasn’t as important.
In the future, I think that the paradime shift will start to change the importance of distribution and marketing as I believe new technology being used in pre-production and production will make them the stronger sections in the film making process and technology will become so advanced that it will draw its own audience in and will become a huge selling point. I think the DIGITISATION OF THE FILM INDUSTRY will be the making of it and will suddenly change the way people see films and their attitudes towards them.
However, in conclusion I do agree with the statement that distribution and marketing is just as important as production practices because this is the case most of the time and most films find their target market through marketing and also the success of many distributors makes them play a large role in making films a success.

What significance does the continuing development of digital technology have for media institutions and audiences?

To what extend does digital distribution affect the marketing and consumption of media products? (film)

New improvements in digital distribution has changed the way the film industry works and how films are consumed by the public. I do think that larger companies benefit from new digital technology, but so do the smaller films as it gives them easier and cheaper ways to market the film.

For my chosen case study Avatar (2009) James Cameron, I think the reason it made a profit of $2.7 billion is because it was the first film to test the technological boundaries and explore what they could do. This could be considered the start of the Paradgym shift for films as Cameron introduced technological convergence with 3D, CGI and motion capture included. The story line was heavily based around digital technology, therefore throughout the marketing campaign new technology effects were used to promote the film such as holographic online characters and also online trailers. This links to their viral campaign online which was advertised on social networking sites such as Facebook and advertisements and banners about its appearance in IMAX to create a positive word of mouth. The convergence of media types such as burger king toys and video games all contribute to how the film is being distributed as similar technology is used in the promotion. The use of new technologies helps to widen the target audience as everyone will be new to this experience and therefore intrueged.

The increase in the use of 3D in many larger films and some smaller films mean they cater for a new audience as they can be consumed by more people, due to the new digital technology that is 3D televisions. The digital distribution of 3D films in cinemas and IMAX will influence the audience to buy the film to watch it with the same experience in the comfort of their own home.

Digital distribution has also developed a lot in terms of how films are copied. We no longer use celluloid to show films but instead have digital copies, meaning smaller companies are able to get the film distributed quicker at a lower cost, meaning it can be viewed more and therefore seen by a larger audience, and this is useful for a lot of films such as 'The Woman In Black' (2012) James Watkins. The downside top this however is that there is now an increase in Piracy as digital copies are a lot easier to make and due to new advances in online technology, films can spread illegally worldwide a lot quicker. However, even with this problem The Woman In Black still managed to make a huge profit of $121 million worldwide and this could be due to the fact that they had both a British and American distributor, Momentum Pictures and CBS films. What started as a small British film then escalated into a worldwide hit as online viral campaigns created a word of mouth with positive online reviews, and also a interactive website available before the films release. This shows how films are adapting to its audience as they are technologically becoming more advanced all the time, so the use of new technology in the film and marketing  campaign  means it reaches its target audience a lot quicker.

Another key example of how digital distribution effects the consumption and marketing is the release of Titanic 3D to remember 100 years since the tragedy. Online and television trailers were adapted and released again with the addition that this time it will be in 3D. This once again links to how it is different than before as 3D televisions will enable the audience to watch it with the input of the new technology. The new profit made of $2 billion signifies that the change in technological distribution does have an effect on how its consumed.

Overall i do think that digital distribution has an effect on the marketing and consumption of films as profits made by films prove this. However in the future, i think that Piracy will be more controlled as internet providers have proposed to start charging people for illegal downloads, meaning less profit will be lost and overall digital copies will be deemed more successful.
